The words of our children can be powerfully positive things. The conversation in the car went something like this…
Bob: We are made of water you know.
Miss Minx: We are made of DNA.
B: What’s that?
MM: Erm bones and things and stuff inside!
MM: It makes you part of a family.
Me: Oh families are so much more than DNA!
Cue conversation about how all families are different etc…
B: I can’t do karate. I couldn’t do the moves because my ADHD stopped me staying still.
MM: I’ve got ADHD and I can do it
Me: Bob has dyspraxia so he finds it hard for his body to plan movements.
MM: Oh… I’ve got ODD. I don’t know what it is though.
B: It means you’re odd! You’ve gone to the right family then!
Laughter all round!
Two adoptees. Two children with multiple challenges. Two children who find social communication a challenge at times.
Yet they are open and honest, find humour in their challenges and celebrate their differences. Just a small conversation with a whole load of heart!
Wouldn’t it be splendid, on Valentines Day, if we could all do a little more of that?
