How many times have you heard the proverbial phrase ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade’?
And how often have you then wanted to freeze those lemons and throw them straight back at life, hitting it square on the nose?
We are two adoptive parents, who met by chance at a time when our lemons were decidedly past their best! We were struggling with compassion fatigue (no we didn’t know what that was), and our small people were challenging us beyond belief. We knew that we, and they, needed help and support – but we didn’t know where to get it.
Because once the adoption order has gone through (yay), and the social workers have vanished (YAY), you can quickly fall out of the loop in terms of knowing what support is available to adoptive families, where to find it, and how adoption support legislation has changed over time. Which is exactly where we found ourselves…exhausted, confused, overwhelmed and a bit broken. Just like our children.
So, we sucked on our lemons for a bit, then decided that adoptive families like us deserved better. What we need is a one stop shop for advice, information and support. Someone to walk with us, and help us get the help we need, quickly and easily.
On our journey, we have met some amazing people and tapped into great organisations (we’ve linked to some of them on our Home Page). We’ve recognised that we are the barometers for our families and should we go off kilter, the whole household follows. So we’ve also realised that asking for help isn’t any kind of failure, it is, in fact, your greatest strength.
Most importantly (but also most difficult) is the realisation that, just like on an aeroplane when the crew tell you to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others, sucking up resources is good, and self-care is a necessity not a luxury.
With that in mind, The Post Adoption Support Hub aims to provide you with a database of information about
- Financial support
- Therapeutic parenting
- Neurological conditions
- Medical support
- Support networks
We’re a work in progress, with Phase 2, the searchable database coming soon, so please bear with us as we build this site into the amazing resource we know you need…and that we’re determined to provide.
If there’s something you’d like to see on this site that isn’t here, if you’d like us to feature your organisation/club/resource, if you’d like to work with us, or if you just need to talk to someone who “gets it”, then please pop on over to our contact page, and drop us a line.
We’d love to hear from you.
